HISP-Ethiopia, initiated in 2003 as an Addis Ababa University project with a memorandum of understanding with the University of Oslo, implemented DHIS 1.3 and 1.4 in public health institutions across regions until 2007. The project aimed to capture and report routine health information, contributing to the Federal Ministry of Health’s initiative for a national harmonized Health Management Information System (HMIS). However, efforts were halted in 2007. In 2013, responding to the Ministry of Health’s invitation, HISP played a key role in introducing and piloting DHIS2 in Ethiopia. The team, including local and global DHIS2 developers, collaborated to achieve nationwide implementation and engaged in various system and app developments, such as the COVID system, scorecard, and bottleneck analysis system.
Given the significant demand for DHIS2 in the country, HISP-Ethiopia has transformed into a fully-fledged network. With a dedicated team of experienced professionals, the organization now supports Ministries and other partners in DHIS2 implementation and undertakes ambitious projects to enhance services for the DHIS2 user community. The team’s dedication and expertise have been instrumental in the success and widespread adoption of DHIS2 in Ethiopia.
