In a significant step towards improving healthcare services in the city, HISP Ethiopia and the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau have announced a strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to shore up capacity, enhance data analytics, and optimize data utilization through DHIS2 platform
The partnership will use the advanced capabilities of DHIS2 to improve Health Information System (HIS), with a particular focus on establishing demonstration sites across selected facilities in Addis Ababa. These sites will serve as models for DHIS2 implementation, showcasing its benefits and inspiring wider adoption across the city as well as other regions of Ethiopia.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the journey towards data-driven decision-making in the health sector. By working together, HISP Ethiopia and the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau aim to create a more efficient, effective, responsive, and equitable healthcare system for the city’s residents.

From September 23 to 27, 2024, to observe Ethiopia’s DHIS2 development, customization, and implementation efforts. Facilitated by HISP Ethiopia and the HISP Center, the visit included site inspections of both offline and online DHIS2 implementations, and discussion with HISP Ethiopia staff regarding their extensive experiences in DHIS2 development, customization, capacity building, implementation, and research.
The team visited Ejere Health Center in the Oromia region to observe offline operations and Zewditu Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa for the online setup.
In addition to the site visits, the team held constructive discussions with the Ministry of Health, addressing DHIS2 implementation challenges and exploring potential areas for improvement. These discussions aimed to enhance collaboration and tailor DHIS2 to Ethiopiaโs specific needs.
We extend our appreciation to the Ministry of Health, Oromia Health Bureau, and Addis Ababa Health Bureau, and staff at Zewditu Hospital and Ejere Health Center for their cooperation throughout the visit.

Seeking to realize a long term goal of promote synergy, maximize the impact of their implementations, and strengthen partnership across Africa, the HISP groups based in Africa have officially established the HISP Africa Hub.
In a three-day meeting at Spice Tree Hotel in Zanzibar, hosted by HISP Tanzania, members signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), agreed on the Terms of Reference and established a Steering Committee. Key appointments were made, including the selection of Sean Broomhead, CEO of HISP South Africa, as the Chairperson of the Steering Committee. HISP Uganda will host the Hub Secretariat. Additionally, Aluka Terpase, Managing Partner of HISP Nigeria, has been appointed as the Project Coordinator.
The Secretariat’s work will be supported by several Technical Working Groups formed by staff from the member HISP groups, under the coordination of the Project Coordinator.
The meeting was attended by leaders and representatives of 15 HISP groups from across Africa, including HISP Ethiopia, HISP Cรดte d’Ivoire, HISP DRC, HISP Ghana, HISP Kenya, HISP University of Malawi, HISP Mali, HISP Saudigitus (Mozambique), HISP Nigeria, HISP Rwanda, HISP South Africa, HISP Tanzania, HISP Uganda, HISP West and Central Africa, and HISP Zimbabwe. Today, HISP Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Health Informatics Association officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work collaboratively in advancing health information systems across the country.
This MoU is designed to build a dynamic network that brings together Health Information Technology & health informatics professionals, DHIS2 experts, researchers, students, and various projects into a cooperative ecosystem. The partnership will focus on sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices to strengthen the health sector’s capacity in data management and health informatics.
As part of the agreement, the two organizations will develop online collaboration platforms, such as forums and webinars, for DHIS2 users to exchange experiences, address challenges, and find solutions. In addition to fostering collaboration, the MoU introduces an internship program aimed at nurturing the next generation of health informatics professionals. This program will offer students and early-career practitioners hands-on experience in real-world projects, exposing them to cutting-edge tools like DHIS2 and allowing them to work alongside experts in the field. Through these internships, students will gain practical skills and contribute directly to initiatives that harness data to improve healthcare delivery and save lives.

HISP Ethiopia, together with other HISP groups across Africa, and the HISP Center at the University of Oslo have taken a significant step toward enhancing global digital health systems by signing an extended Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening the global HISP movement and advancing the development of DHIS2 as a global public good.
Effective from October 5, 2024, this agreement focuses on promoting sustainable digital health solutions through open-source software while supporting government ownership of information systems. The MoU also emphasizes knowledge and skills sharing across the global DHIS2 community, with a commitment to long-term capacity development, transparency, and participatory design, ensuring that local needs and priorities are at the forefront of implementation efforts.
