IMPULSE Phase II Project Officially Concludes with Closing Workshop in Addis Ababa

HISP Ethiopia participated in the official closing workshop of the IMPULSE Phase II project, organized by Doctors with Africa CUAMM on May 26, 2026, in Addis Ababa. The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, implementing health facilities, and the Addis Ababa Health Bureau to review the project’s achievements, lessons learned, and key findings, while formally marking the successful completion of Phase II.

Throughout its implementation, the IMPULSE Phase II project contributed to strengthening health service delivery and data-driven decision-making through innovative digital health interventions. The closing workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on the project’s impact, share experiences from implementation sites, and discuss opportunities for sustaining and expanding the gains achieved during the project period.

As a key implementation partner, HISP Ethiopia played a significant role in designing and deploying digital solutions to support the project’s objectives. One of the major achievements was the development of a custom DHIS2-based Newborn. The application was designed to improve routine data quality assessment and monitoring of maternal and neonatal health indicators by automating the comparison of source-register data with HMIS-reported data across eleven priority indicators.

The system streamlined facility-level data verification processes, reduced manual calculations and human error, and enabled real-time visualization of data quality performance within DHIS2. In addition, HISP Ethiopia developed interactive dashboards that provided facility, woreda, and regional-level users . These dashboards enhanced visibility of reporting quality, supported supervisors in identifying discrepancies, and strengthened evidence-based decision-making.

Beyond system development, HISP Ethiopia led capacity-building efforts through comprehensive user training sessions for data clerks, woreda health office staff, and regional data analysts. Participants were trained on DHIS2 workflows,  data quality analysis, dashboard utilization, and interpretation of results. The project also included field visits and on-site technical support to validate system functionality, strengthen user capacity, and gather feedback for future improvements.

The successful deployment of the Newborn and Stillbirth application and dashboards represents an important step toward institutionalizing routine data quality assessments within DHIS2 and strengthening the use of quality data for maternal and newborn health programs.

HISP Ethiopia extends its sincere appreciation to the Principal Investigators (PIs), the country office team, implementing partners, health facilities, and all stakeholders whose dedication and collaboration were instrumental in the successful completion of the IMPULSE Phase II project.

While Phase II has officially concluded, the knowledge, partnerships, and digital innovations established through the project will continue to support efforts toward stronger, more resilient, and data-driven health systems in Ethiopia.
