Our Story

HISP-Ethiopia began in 2003 as a collaborative initiative between Addis Ababa University and the University of Oslo. Through this partnership, early versions of DHIS (1.3 and 1.4) were deployed across regional public health institutions, supporting the Federal Ministry of Health’s move toward a unified national Health Management Information System. Although the initial phase paused in 2007, the foundation it laid proved essential for future nationwide digital transformation.

In 2017, following an invitation from the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia, HISP returned with renewed momentum—this time to introduce and pilot DHIS2 in Ethiopia. Working alongside local experts and global DHIS2 developers, the team contributed significantly to the national rollout and to major system innovations, including digital platforms for COVID-19 response, performance scorecards, and bottleneck analysis.

Over the years, growing national demand for scalable, interoperable digital systems led to the evolution of HISP-Ethiopia into a fully established organization in 2018. Today, HISP-Ethiopia is not only a leader in health information systems but also a technical partner supporting digital transformation across multiple sectors, including education, agriculture, climate and environment, and broader public administration and Non-governmental tracking systems.

With a strong team of multidisciplinary professionals, HISP-Ethiopia delivers system design, implementation, capacity building, and long-term support to Ministries, regional bureaus, development partners, and NGOs. The organization’s deep expertise and commitment have played a defining role in Ethiopia’s digital ecosystem—ensuring that data is not only collected but transformed into actionable intelligence for decision-making across sectors.
